Soup To Nuts: Building Your Compliance Program
(so you can still eat your soup and not go nuts!)

Thursday, May 11, 2017 - Atlanta, GA

Building a sound compliance program in today’s environment is essential to survival.  Many suppliers struggle with determining what is and what is not reasonable or expected when it comes to proactive compliance.  What many are not taking into consideration is what is required by law.

A fundamental mistake is to think you have met your compliance program requirements because you are accredited!  Did you know that CMS considers suppliers without a comprehensive compliance program to be negligent in the event of adverse actions? Or that the OIG’s exclusion authority has been expanded to enable them to revoke the billing privileges of a supplier that has had compliance issues and an ineffective or non-existent compliance program?

Suppliers billing Medicare must have a compliance program that meets government standards. This in-depth and interactive presentation will discuss those requirements and provide insight on best practices and practical solutions available to suppliers to assure that their compliance program is effective and does what is it supposed to do - which is protect your business!

This fast-paced, action-pack day is designed for HME owners, operators, managers, as well as compliance officers and upper-level billing & reimbursement personnel.

The full-day program is led by:

Laura Williard is the senior director of payer relations for the American Association for Homecare. She has served in the HME community for more than 24 years, most recently at Advanced Home Care as senior director of regulatory affairs, reimbursement compliance, and contracting. Williard has extensive experience working with managed care, Medicare advantage, MEDICAID MCOs, and state Medicaid programs.  Laura is very active in the state associations, serving on the board for GAMES, Vice President for NCAMES, and Vice President for ATHOMES.  She also served as the Vice Chair for the Jurisdiction C Medicare Council, and is a founding member of the Mediware User Group.  Williard also participated as a member of the Palmetto 16 State Coalition Committee and sits on the Public Policy Committee of the Visiting Nurses Association of America. In addition to her industry involvement, Williard has previous experience managing a large reimbursement department with 150 employees and was responsible for all aspects of the revenue cycle.

Wayne H. van Halem, AHFI, CFE is the founder and President of The van Halem Group. The Atlanta-based firm was founded in 2006. In 2011, it acquired HC Comply, an Amarillo-based compliance consulting firm.  In 2014, The van Halem Group merged with VGM Group, Inc of Waterloo, IA.     Operated as a division of VGM, van Halem leads the team as they assist providers in navigating the complex issues related to audits, appeals, enrollment, and compliance. A former auditor and national appeals director with Medicare, Wayne is also a published author and well-known lecturer.  He is an Accredited Healthcare Fraud Investigator through the National Healthcare Anti-Fraud Association and a Certified Fraud Examiner through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and has served on the faculty of both organizations. Since 2006, his company has saved suppliers over $70 million in overpayments and denial recoveries.
