Georgia Medicaid and Diabetic Supplies - August 2011
Posted to the Georgia Medicaid website on August 3, 2011:
Effective July 1, 2011, The Georgia Department of Community Health (the Department) will transi-tion the following diabetic supplies: syringes, lancets, glucose monitoring strips, and glucose monitors to the Pharmacy program. The following supplies will no longer be reimbursable under the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) program (category of services 320):
DME SUPPLY.........................................CODE
Lancet----------------------------------------------------A4259
Glucose strips-----------------------------------------A4253
Monitor---------------------------------------------------E2100 (w/integrated voice synthesizer)
Only the insulin infusion pump (E0784) and its supplies (A4230, A4231, A4232, K0101, K0602, K0603 and K0604) will continue to be reimbursed under the DME program. Diabetic supplies will only be available through enrolled Medicaid fee-for-service Pharmacies when prescribed by a Physician. Pharmacies enrolled as Medicaid pharmacy providers are eligible to dis-pense syringes, lancets, and glucose monitoring strips to non-nursing home Medicaid Peachcare and fee-for-service diabetic patients. The Department will not reimburse for repairs of a home blood glucose monitor. The physician?s prescription must be kept on file and the member?s medical records must include the diagnosis, how frequently the blood must be tested per day, and the date of confinement for pregnant diabetics.
For detailed information pertaining to outpatient pharmacy prior approvals and related pharmacy services, refer to the Part II Policy and Procedure Manual for Pharmacy Services. Provider manuals may be accessed at www.mmis.georgia.gov.
